Pairpoint Manufacturing Company
Glass
(1870–1930)
In 1880 the directors of the Mount Washington glass factory (New Bedford, Mass) established the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company on property adjoining the glass factory. It was originally set up to make plated Britannia metal products to complement their glasswares. London-born Thomas J. Pairpoint (1838-1902) was appointed superintendent. In 1894 the two factoriesd merged. In 1900 the company was reorganized under the name Pairpoint Corporation, manufacturers of lamps and other goods made of both glass and metal. They closed their doors in 1937 after suffering a financial blow as a result of the Depression.

They first offered electric lamps in 1904 called "electroliers." In July of 1907 the company received a patent for a new way to make mold-blown lamp shades. They were called "puffy" of "blown-out" because the outside of the shade was comprised of raised, frosted ornament, usually flowers or fruit. Production of the "puffies" had been underway since 1905. Originally, puffies were less expensive than their scenic shades because they required less skill to decorate.
